Document Details : Title: The Illumination of the Lunar Disc in 1 En. 78:6-8 in Relation to the Lunar Month Author(s): DRAWNEL, Henryk Journal: Revue de Qumran Volume: 37 Issue: 1 Date: numéro 125, 2025 Pages: 109-139 DOI: 10.2143/RQ.37.1.3294508 Abstract : The article analyzes the Ethiopic text of 1 En. 78:6-9, in light of the Aramaic fragmentary text 4Q210 1 III, 3-8. This text overlaps with the Enochic verses and adds new information, particularly regarding the waning phase presented in detail in 1 En. 78:8. I argue that the description of the waxing of the moon in 1 En. 78:6-9 is not a summary of 4Q208-4Q209, as some scholars have suggested. Rather, it is an account of the lunar month that describes the illumination of the lunar disc and establishes its governing principle of arithmetical progression. Thus, although the 0.5/7 fraction is presented as the underlying principle of the calculation, both the Ethiopic pericope and the Aramaic text refer exclusively to the illumination of the lunar disc, as is the case with column F in 4Q208-4Q209. Any reference to lunar visibility periods, which are also governed by the 0.5/7 fraction in 4Q208-4Q209, has been omitted. Additionally, I propose a new solution to the question of the fifteen parts of lunar illumination during the waxing phase in 1 En. 78:7. Furthermore, I interpret the decrease in lunar illumination in 1 En. 78:8 as a calculation based on unit fractions, unlike in 1 En. 78:6-7 and 4Q208-4Q209. Cet article analyse le texte éthiopien de 1 En. 78:6-9, à la lumière du texte fragmentaire araméen 4Q210 1 III, 3-8. Ce texte recoupe les versets énochiques et ajoute de nouvelles informations, notamment concernant la phase décroissante présentée en détail dans 1 En. 78:8. Je soutiens que la description de la lune croissante dans 1 En. 78:6-9 n’est pas un résumé de 4Q208-4Q209, comme certains chercheurs l’ont suggéré. Il s’agit plutôt d’un récit du mois lunaire qui décrit l’illumination du disque lunaire et établit son principe directeur de progression arithmétique. Ainsi, bien que la fraction 0,5/7 soit présentée comme le principe sous-jacent du calcul, la péricope éthiopienne et le texte araméen se réfèrent exclusivement à l’illumination du disque lunaire, comme c’est le cas dans la colonne F de 4Q208-4Q209. Toute référence aux périodes de visibilité lunaire, qui sont également régies par la fraction 0,5/7 dans 4Q208-4Q209, a été omise. En outre, je propose une nouvelle solution à la question des quinze parties de l’illumination lunaire pendant la phase croissante dans 1 En. 78:7. De plus, j’interprète la diminution de l’illumination lunaire dans 1 En. 78:8 comme un calcul basé sur des fractions unitaires, contrairement à 1 En. 78:6-7 et 4Q208-4Q209. |
