Document Details : Title: Implementing the Marriage Theology of Vatican II Subtitle: On an Important Desideratum Author(s): KNIEPS-PORT LE ROI, Thomas Journal: Marriage, Families & Spirituality Volume: 31 Issue: 1 Date: 2025 Pages: 76-83 DOI: 10.2143/INT.31.1.3294441 Abstract : The article assumes that the vision and the theology of the Second Vatican Council have not been fully implemented in the post-conciliar period, especially when it comes to the theology of marriage. Two remaining vestiges of pre-conciliar theology continue to surface in the life of the church and the faithful: first, a 'contractual' or legalistic understanding of marriage that neglects and undermines the person-centered vision of Vatican II, and second, a 'procreative' view of marriage in which 'conjugal love' – an essential and characteristic term of the council – is again and still subordinated to childbearing. The aim of the article is to retrieve and then eliminate pre-conciliar relics. |
