Abstract :
The application of the category of the image of God to the human couple is due to the magisterium of John Paul II, who defines marriage as a 'real symbol' (FC 13). The symbolic interpretation of the concept of image has led to a static vision of the spirituality of the spouses and to a prioritization of space in the process of discernment, reduced to checking the conformity of the different aspects of the couple’s relationship to a body of norms that defines the conjugal state. In Amoris laetitia, Pope Francis goes beyond the concept of image and speaks of the indwelling of the Trinity in the communion of marriage (cf. AL 314), promoting a historical-salvific vision of the conjugal reality which, already inhabited by God, is on its way to the fullness of God’s dwelling with humanity. Interpreting the communion of love of the spouses as a historical process in which the Trinity dwells leads to assigning priority to time and directs us to assume discernment as a constant disposition of the spirit intent on understanding the presence of the Trinity in the dynamism that animates conjugal communion, urging it unceasingly towards its fullness. The application of the category of indwelling of the Trinity to the communion of marriage promotes the passage from a symbolic, static, and normative spirituality to a historical-salvific, dynamic, and relational spirituality.
