Document Details : Title: Magisterial and Theological Uses of Science Subtitle: Tensions in Sexual Anthropology Author(s): LAWLER, Michael G. , SALZMAN, Todd A. Journal: Marriage, Families & Spirituality Volume: 31 Issue: 1 Date: 2025 Pages: 22-41 DOI: 10.2143/INT.31.1.3294438 Abstract : Science and theology are two of the most important cognitive systems in the world and, historically, have been at odds in their interpretation of reality. In A.D. White’s infamous words more than a century ago, they have been engaged in 'warfare'. Popes John Paul II and Francis have called for a deeper integration of, and consonance between, science and theology that promotes a future that is 'healthier, more human, more social, more integral'. In this essay, we first examine the consonances between theology and science and argue for the less than absolute and subjectively attained scientific and theological knowledge with the hope of pointing both scientists and theologians toward that better human future that Lutheran Professor of THeology Ted Peters calls a search for 'the domain of inquiry shared by science and theology'. Second, we apply this knowledge to Catholic sexual anthropology and explore traditionalist and revisionist anthropologies based on the integration of scientific and theological knowledge. |
