Cet article corrige également certaines erreurs ou confusions formulées jadis par Maspero et Daressy, véhiculées depuis lors dans les publications. An in-depth examination of unpublished archives held in several institutions (EPHE, Institut de France, Bibliothèque nationale de France, National and Diplomatic Archives, Bouches-du-Rhône, Gard and Var Departmental Archives) has enabled us to gain a better understanding of the enigmatic figure of Louis Chaillan (1825-1908), a transitory inspector of the Service de conservation des Antiquités de l’Égypte in training, and the identity of his promoter alongside Mariette, the highly controversial François Bravay. This article also corrects some of the errors and misunderstandings made by Maspero and Daressy in the past, which have since appeared in publications. |
