Document Details : Title: The Beatitude of the Poor Subtitle: Promise, Social Message or Spiritual Requirement? Author(s): HESS, Katja Journal: Biblica Volume: 106 Issue: 1 Date: 2025 Pages: 65-86 DOI: 10.2143/BIB.106.1.3294359 Abstract : This contribution aims to clarify the old, but still inadequately answered, question of the interpretation of the first beatitude (Matt 5,3; Luke 6,20) by conducting an examination of its individual components. This allows the beatitude to be contextualized within Jesus’ proclamation of the kingdom in the context of both Gospels. The study addresses the understanding of poverty and of μακάριος as well as the underlying concept of happiness. To this end, the analysis considers not only the Old Testament and Jewish-Hellenistic backgrounds, but also the philosophical-historical context, given that Hellenistic Judaism was influenced by this philosophical milieu. |
