Journal: Augustiniana Volume: 75 Issue: 1 Date: 2025 Pages: 45-65 DOI: 10.2143/AUG.75.1.3294279 Abstract : Biblical citations from Augustine’s works are of great value for understanding the transmission of the text of the Latin Bible. However, they must be critically assessed before they can be used towards researching the textual history of the Latin Bible. One way to address this issue is to evaluate whether Augustine’s biblical citations are consistent within a specified group of writings. This contribution evaluates the textual consistency of the citations of 1 Corinthians in Augustine’s anti-Arian corpus, consisting of Contra sermonem Arrianorum, Conlatio cum Maximino, and Contra Maximinum. The analysis focuses on the quotations shared by these three writings (1 Cor 1:24; 3:16; 6:15; 6:19; 15:28). These are compared to other witnesses of the Latin text, including Old Latin manuscripts and the Vulgate. Correspondence to the Greek tradition is examined where relevant. This paper increases the understanding of Augustine’s biblical text, his citation habits, and his role in the transmission of the Latin Bible. |
