Abstract :
Agostino Dati’s (1420-1478) Isagogicus Libellus would become one of the most popular Latin style guides of the fifteenth century. In its first edition (1471), however, a different author and title altogether are mentioned in the colophon: 'expliciunt elegantiae minores Laurentii Vallae poetae'. This article will explore the source of this misattribution and other misattributions of the work in manuscript copies. In particular, I treat the chronology of these misattributions, consulting a letter written by Dati on the topic (translated here into English for the first time) and analyse the shift in the accepted title of the work from Isagogicus Libellus to Elegantiolae, even after the authorial attribution had been corrected.
