Abstract :
This article presents a critical edition of the Latin text together with the first English translation of Juan Luis Vives’ De conditione vitae Christianorum sub Turca (1529). Written at a time when the political fragility of Christendom rendered it highly susceptible to the threat of Ottoman invasion, Vives’ treatise elaborates the trials which he thought Christians were likely to experience under Turkish rule. In order to enlighten those Christians who may have thought that submitting to Ottoman suzerainty would be preferable to enduring their current prince’s deficiencies, Vives paints a grim picture of the likely consequences. This topic has hitherto drawn scant attention from Vives scholars, although contemporary works on the subject by other humanists have inspired considerable interest.
