Document Details : Title: La leona domesticada Subtitle: El encomio de Doña Juana en el Panegírico de Felipe el Hermoso (1504) de Erasmo de Rotterdam Author(s): DÍAZ GITO, Manuel Antonio Journal: Humanistica Lovaniensia Volume: 73 Date: 2024 Pages: 115-154 DOI: 10.2143/HLO.73.0.3294195 Abstract : From a gender perspective this article focuses on a short passage concerning Juana, Archduchess of Austria and Princess of Asturias, which is included in the Panegyric for Archduke Philip of Austria (1504) by Erasmus of Rotterdam. In this text, entitled 'encomium of the most noble Joanna' (Laus generosissimae dominae Iohannae, Pan. 869-886), he deliberately conveys an image of Philip the Fair’s wife, who was heiress to the thrones of Castile and Aragon, as a woman lacking political empowerment. In order to compose this portrait, which was consistent with the notion of the inferior nature of women as it prevailed in the patriarchal ideology of Christian humanism, Erasmus used a rhetorical comparison of the Castilian princess with ten famous women from Antiquity. |
