The following paper aims to examine the parts copied in Italy from a codex started in 1477 and preserved today in Stuttgart, Württembergische Landesbibliothek, Cod. poet. et phil. qt. 21. This codex included important texts from humanist Janus Pannonius (Panegyricus in Guarinum and the Elegies 16 and 17) as well as works by Tito Vespasiano Strozzi, among others. The analysis of the works of Janus Pannonius preserved in Stuttgart draws different conclusions. Firstly, it shows that Janus was a well-known poet in Ferrara in the 1470s. As far as Panegyric to Guarino is concerned, we can assume the copy of Stuttgart was made from the ‘official’ final version of the text, which could have been the copy in the house of the Guarinos. Regarding the poetic correspondence between Janus and Tito, the manuscript presents important variants that allow us to presume that a collection must have existed containing elegies from both poets; this collection was likely circulating in Ferrara’s network. For all that, this manuscript helps us to understand better the handwritten legacy of Janus Pannonius. |
