Document Details : Title: Towards a Study of Latin Translations of Demosthenes' Περὶ τοῦ στεφάνου in the Fifteenth Century Author(s): REINERS, Jannik Journal: Humanistica Lovaniensia Volume: 73 Date: 2024 Pages: 1-39 DOI: 10.2143/HLO.73.0.3294191 Abstract : This article first provides an overview of all the extant fifteenth-century Latin translations of Demosthenes’ oratorical masterpiece Περὶ τοῦ στεφάνου (= Dem. or. 18), commonly referred to as ‘De corona’ or ‘Pro Ctesiphonte’ in Latin and ‘On the Crown’ in English, and then examines the relationships between them by inspecting and comparing their renderings of the first eight paragraphs of the speech (the proem). Finally, transcriptions of §§1-8 of each translation, hitherto unedited except for Bruni’s version, will be made available to a broader public. |
