The excavations revealed that contrary to the prevailing view that associated copper production with outside empires, massive production was carried out when the area was not under the yoke of foreign empires, and should be associated with local groups and polities. The paper will review the data and will show that these insights fit the growing body of evidence regarding the Assyrian imperial policy in the region, the nature of its economic exploitation of its clients, and of Assyrian hegemony at large. Les récentes découvertes à Kh. en-Nahas et Timna ont révolutionné notre compréhension de la production de cuivre de l’âge du fer dans le sud du Levant. Les fouilles ont révélé que, contrairement à l’opinion dominante qui associait la production de cuivre à des empires extérieurs, une production massive était réalisée lorsque la région n’était pas sous le joug d’empires étrangers, et devait être associée à des groupes et des entités politiques locaux. L’article passe en revue les données et montre que ces découvertes s’inscrivent dans le cadre d’un ensemble croissant de preuves concernant la politique impériale assyrienne dans la région, la nature de l’exploitation économique de ses clients et de l’hégémonie assyrienne en général. |
