Document Details : Title: Πόθεν and the Question of Jesus' Origin in the Gospel of John Author(s): ISSAC, Jomson Journal: Biblica Volume: 105 Issue: 4 Date: 2024 Pages: 584-605 DOI: 10.2143/BIB.105.4.3294178 Abstract : The Johannine use of the interrogative adverb πόθεν is distinct from that of the Synoptic Gospels, as its multiple occurrences appear predominantly in association with the question of Jesus’ origin. Despite its significance, a focused study on the treatment of πόθεν in the Gospel of John with regard to Jesus’ origin remains absent in current scholarship. The present study addresses this gap by undertaking an exegetical analysis of the use of πόθεν in John 7,27-28; 8,14; 9,29-30 and 19,9. It examines the meaning of πόθεν and analyses its significance in shaping the Johannine understanding of Jesus’ origin and identity. |
