Document Details : Title: A Gezerah Shawah in Mark 1,2-3 Author(s): BASTA, Pasquale Journal: Biblica Volume: 105 Issue: 4 Date: 2024 Pages: 543-559 DOI: 10.2143/BIB.105.4.3294175 Abstract : In Mark 1,2-3 under the heading of Isaiah there is actually a conflated text in which recur — in addition to Isa 40,3 — Mal 3,1 and Exod 23,20. All these texts are characterised by an evident vagueness which excluded any unanimous application to a specific situation or character. At Qumran it was believed that these three texts referred to the Essene community, insofar as the sectarians themselves were preparing the way of the Lord in a desert location. Mark, resorting to a gezerah shawah, shows instead how the application of the text must fall on a very specific individual, namely, John the Baptist, who precisely in the desert prepared the way for the Lord, who is now to be understood as the Lord Jesus. |
