Abstract :
There is nothing specifically Sabine in the name of Appius Claudius and its archaic or local version Attius Clausus. The Claudii could claim Sabine origin due to their estates and clientele beyond the Anio. The agnomen Regillensis shows the link of the gens Claudia with Lake Regillus in the vicinity of Tusculum. Behind the traditional story of the Claudian migration from the Sabine country is hiding an earlier version of their arrival from the Latin town.
