Abstract :
This article recounts the career of Q. Lutatius Catulus Capitolinus, the Roman statesman who led the optimate group in the senate in the 70s and 60s. It attempts to do two things. One is to record in one place all that is known about Catulus. Two is to answer some key questions about Catulus: (1) Why is he unappreciated today? (2) How did he become a prominent Roman leader without following the normal paths to leadership? (3) What was his relationship with such diverse figures as Sulla, Catiline, Pompey, and Caesar? (4) Why did he fall from power at the end of the 60s? (5) How did his contemporaries view him? and (6) How successful was he as a statesman?
