Dopo un paragrafo introduttivo che analizza le possibili cause della crisi della storiografia della chiesa romana (il Liber Pontificalis propriamente detto), l’articolo si concentra sui cataloghi papali redatti nei secoli X e XI, e sul Chronicon di Benedetto di S. Andrea al Soratte. Dallo studio emerge un panorama variegato, malgrado la nota esiugità delle fonti, con una tendenza ‘conservativa’ nelle modalità di rappresentazione storiografica che emerge con particolare evidenza a proposito del papato di Giovanni XII. The present study examines how the papacy and the society of Rome during the «saeculum obscurum» period are depicted in the main historiographical sources produced in the Roman region between the tenth and eleventh centuries. Following an introductory section that examines the potential causes of the crisis in the historiography of the Roman Church (the Liber Pontificalis), the article delves into the papal catalogues compiled in the tenth and eleventh centuries and the Chronicon of Benedict of St. Andrew of Soratte. Despite the limited number of sources, a diverse picture emerges from the study, with a noticeable ‘conservative’ tendency in the modes of historiographical representation, particularly with regard to the papacy of John XII. |
