La prima parte del saggio esamina i racconti della sua morte riportati da alcuni cronisti medievali e le diverse interpretazioni della sua figura presenti in alcuni storici medievali e moderni. La seconda parte analizza la sua concezione della Chiesa e la sua corrispondenza dopo l’elezione al papato. Gerbert d’Aurillac, after having been abbot of Bobbio (late 980), archbishop of Reims (June 991) and archbishop of Ravenna (April 998) was appointed pope (April 999) by his disciple and emperor Otto III (April 999) and assumed the name Sylvester II. The first part of the essay examines the stories of his death reported by some medieval chroniclers and the different interpretations of his figure in some medieval and modern historians. The second part analyzes his conception of the Church and the correspondence after his election to the papacy. |
