Abstract :
The Armenians of Eudocia/Tokat experienced a renaissance in the late 17th century. At the time, Eudocia was an important trading center in the Ottoman Empire and the Armenians of Eudocia contributed to its economic vibrancy. During this period, the activity of Minas Amdecʽi, the primate of the Diocese in Eudocia, helped advance the cultural and educational life of the Armenian community in Eudocia. This intellectual movement continued after Minas Amdecʽi left Eudocia. Other scribes and illuminators came to Eudocia after him and carried on certain artistic traditions. One of them was Ełia Marzvancʽi, who arrived in Eudocia in the early 18th century. The cultural and educational traditions established by Minas Amdecʽi and his coterie were carried on by Ełia Marzvancʽi. Later, as a teacher, he passed the same traditions and practices on to others. In his work as an illuminator, Ełia Marzvancʽi followed the Armenian miniature style of Constantinople and Nor Juła. He shared cultural ties with both the Armenian population in Eudocia and those from Eastern Armenia. These connections are evidenced by the geographical diversity of the commissioners of his works. In his colophons, Ełia Marzvancʽi provided details about historical figures and churches that were active in Eudocia. Archbishops of the Diocese of Eudocia, Petros Berdumyan and Hovhannes, are discussed in particular. Currently, we only know details about 11 manuscripts that Ełia Marzvancʽi copied and illuminated. This article contains a list of these manuscripts along with a brief description of each. Additionally, the list provides information of the manuscripts’ current whereabouts (some of which are lost). Additionally, this list of Ełia Marzvancʽi’s manuscripts explains their provenance, how they were saved and in which collections they are currently housed.
