Document Details : Title: To what Extent did Armenia Become Christian during the Fourth and Fifth Centuries? Subtitle: Performing Christianity among Armenian Elites Author(s): CINEMRE, İlhami Tekin Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 137 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2024 Pages: 405-433 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.137.3.3293894 Abstract : The narrative of the Christian history of Armenia has taken on a mythical character, a development exacerbated by the absence of pagan Armenian historiographical sources. The fourth and fifth centuries hold particular significance for Armenia in this narrative, as they do for other regions. However, questions linger regarding the accuracy of the Christianization depicted by Christian Armenian sources and the extent of Christianity’s impact on Armenian elites. This study attempts to examine the influence of Christianity during the fourth and fifth centuries in a multicultural religious environment and to determine the extent to which Christianity was actually practiced. |
