This densely written, impenetrable work later saw a whole series of commentaries, especially in North Africa, the first one by his student and polymath Ibn Wāṣil al-Ḥamawī (d. 697/1298). The present edition is the first edition of Ibn Wāṣil’s commentary and the first to be edited from among the commentaries mentioned. After a brief review of the Introduction and the methodology of the edition, the remainder of this article will delve into a number of logical issues bearing testimony to Ibn Wāṣil’s genius and independence. |
