Abstract :
The new edition of the Ritual for the Purification of a House (CTH 446), offers an excellent opportunity to reflect upon the composite tradition of the Hittite magic texts dedicated to the purification of places in various ways. This concise review article will focus on some aspects, such as the role of the performers of those practices and their relationship with the deities involved in the removal of impurity. It will also discuss the term ešḫar, 'blood' and 'bloodshed' in the lists of calamities of purification rituals, where it appears to be used to include all possible reasons of pollution that may affect the patient, whether a human being, a deity, or a place.
