Abstract :
This paper focuses on the ethics of F.D.E. Schleiermacher (1768-1834) and the suggestions it offers for thinking about theological ethics today. The first part of the paper looks at Schleiermacher’s ethical work, highlighting the constant ethical preoccupation of the German philosopher, whom some have described as a 'forgotten moralist'. The second part presents Schleiermacher’s Christian moral doctrine, situating it in relation to his philosophical ethics and his 'dogmatics'. Based on this overview, the third section suggests avenues of reflection for developing a theological ethics in conjunction with philosophy and dogmatics, among other things, and in the interrelationship between virtue, duty, and the supreme good.
