Abstract :
Although little known and less appreciated in Trinity College Dublin, Gilbart Smyly was recognised by international colleagues as one of the best readers of Greek papyri in the first generation of those working in the new discipline of papyrology. He was also a distinguished and industrious editor of the medieval manuscripts in the Library of Trinity College. This article seeks to place him in his social and academic context.
