Document Details : Title: The Date of Ezra's Mission Subtitle: Undoing Some Chronological Theologoumena Author(s): FOGIELMAN, Charles-Antoine Journal: Biblica Volume: 105 Issue: 3 Date: 2024 Pages: 356-373 DOI: 10.2143/BIB.105.3.3293718 Abstract : The date of Ezra’s return to Jerusalem has been severally ascribed to 458 or 398, depending on whether the king Artaxerxes mentioned in chapter seven is Artaxerxes I or Artaxerxes II. This paper advances the hypothesis that Ezra 1-4; 6,15-22; 7,7-26 (additions notwithstanding) contain a narrative backbone structured around a chronology which places Ezra’s return under Artaxerxes II in 398. This stratum was later obfuscated by additions seeking to move the return closer in time to the Edict of Cyrus. |
