Document Details : Title: Hermeneutical Strategies on Divine Violence in the Bible Author(s): LASS, Magdalena Journal: Journal of the European Society of Women in Theological Research Volume: 32 Date: 2024 Pages: 111-128 DOI: 10.2143/ESWTR.32.0.3293702 Abstract : This paper will analyse exemplary texts from the Old Testament and explore the different forms of violence God is using as well as the various forms of constellations in which God is depicted as a warrior. In a second step, the question of how to deal with those texts will be explored. I will show the variety of hermeneutical approaches, naming both chances (encouragement, possibility to process experiences of violence…) and dangers (legitimisation of violence…). The different hermeneutics are not merely listed but categorised using a tree diagram. On the one hand, this should make the many possibilities visible, but on the other, it should also show the dependence of the different hermeneutics on preliminary decisions. In this context, the paper will also point out the relevance of the initial situation of the exegetes and the reading community. Reference will be made to the context of war in Ukraine and the ensuing change in the perception of biblical texts will be addressed, even when these do not envision violent instances at first sight. In diesem Beitrag werden exemplarische Texte aus dem Alten Testament analysiert und die verschiedenen Formen der Gewaltanwendung Gottes sowie die unterschiedlichen Konstellationen, in denen Gott als Krieger dargestellt wird, untersucht. In einem zweiten Schritt wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie mit diesen Texten umgegangen werden kann. Ich werde die Vielfalt der hermeneutischen Ansätze aufzeigen und dabei sowohl Chancen (Ermutigung, Möglichkeit zur Verarbeitung von Gewalterfahrungen…) als auch Gefahren (Legitimierung von Gewalt…) benennen. Die verschiedenen hermeneutischen Ansätze werden nicht nur aufgelistet, sondern anhand eines Baumdiagramms kategorisiert. Dies soll zum einen die vielen Möglichkeiten sichtbar machen, zum anderen aber auch die Abhängigkeit der verschiedenen hermeneutischen Methoden von Vorentscheidungen aufzeigen. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch auf die Relevanz der Ausgangssituation der Exeget:innen und der Leserschaft hingewiesen. Dabei wird auf den Kontext des Krieges in der Ukraine Bezug genommen und die daraus resultierende veränderte Wahrnehmung biblischer Texte thematisiert, auch wenn diese auf den ersten Blick keine gewalttätigen Instanzen erkennen lassen. Este artículo analiza textos ejemplares del Antiguo Testamento y explora las distintas formas de violencia que Dios usa, así como varias constelaciones en las que se presenta a Dios como guerrero. En un segundo momento, se explora la cuestión de cómo relacionarse con estos textos. Se muestran una variedad de perspectivas hermenéuticas, identificando tanto las oportunidades que tales textos presentan (apoyo, posibilidad de procesar experiencias de violencia…) así como sus peligros (legitimización de la violencia…). Estas distintas hermenéuticas no sólo se listan, sino que se ofrece una categorización a través de un diagrama en árbol. Por un lado, esto hace visibles las muchas posibilidades hermenéuticas, pero, por el otro, también devela la dependencia de estas hermenéuticas de decisiones preliminares. En este contexto, el artículo destaca la relevancia de la situación inicial de los y las exégetas y la comunidad lectora. También se hace mención al contexto de guerra en Ucrania y el cambio de percepción en los textos bíblicos que ello provoca, incluso cuando estos no muestran instancias de violencia. |
