Abstract :
In this article I investigate the possible connections between Sartre’s realism and the American neo-realist movement. I discuss the different critiques of idealism, the egocentric predicament, as well as the debate about internal and external relations. This will finally clarify the role of what Sartre calls metaphysics in the foundation of his philosophical realism. I conclude by contrasting the theses through which Ralph Berton Perry defines neo-realism with Sartre’s positions in order to assess the extent to which the latter can be qualified as neo-realist.
