Abstract :
What role does commercium [exchange] play in Erich Przywara’s understanding of spirituality? Taking up the themes of connubium [marriage] and agape [selfless love] in particular as ciphers for the role of analogy in Przywara’s spirituality, this paper shows that it is in the relationship between any two subjects that we discover the Christological pattern Przywara wishes to adumbrate. Far from being abstract, we see that in its concrete form Przywara’s spirituality is concerned with a kind of ‘virginal’ discourse. This is where each subject is open to the other in the desire for intimacy whilst also preserving the necessary distance that makes the intimacy possible and sustains it. Without this analogical form in psycho-spiritual relations between persons there is a risk of erasing or absorbing the other through a violently excessive intimacy, on the one hand, or separating from or instrumentalising the other by an equally violent distancing, on the other. Only where the structuring of analogy is found can psycho-spiritual relations meet the conditions for a ‘marital exchange’ after the pattern of Christ’s incarnation.
