Document Details : Title: From 'Oddness' and 'Lack' to 'Nothingness' Subtitle: In Search of Mystical Traces in Music Author(s): SAWICKI, Bernard Journal: Studies in Spirituality Volume: 33 Date: 2024 Pages: 115-136 DOI: 10.2143/SIS.33.0.3293659 Abstract : The article attempts to show how the structure of a musical work can foster a possible experience of ‘mystical moments’ for the listener. These moments occur at the interface of perception with certain inconsistencies or even gaps in the musical structure. After an analysis of their formal origins, the inevitable ambiguity of music is revealed, whereby shortcomings, non-sequences, formal gaps or even deformations paradoxically open music up to something more than just acoustic sound, giving it a transcendent and mystical dimension. This becomes possible through a multidimensional exploration of the ‘in-between’ space, which in turn introduces new cognitive dimensions to the music. At the same time, this leads to new and surprising configurations of music with human existence, reaching into areas of morality. Finally, the subject of silence is touched upon: it is important because on the one hand silence is a negation of music, but on the other hand it is an organic component of it. The conclusion attempts to relate the concepts presented in the article to formal deficiencies or oddities to the classical understanding of the concept of mysticism. |
