Document Details : Title: Transcendental Abyss Subtitle: Enthusiasm for Mysticism and Criticism of Mysticism in the Philosophy of German Idealism Author(s): KREUZER, Johann Journal: Studies in Spirituality Volume: 33 Date: 2024 Pages: 55-68 DOI: 10.2143/SIS.33.0.3293656 Abstract : The article discusses forms of enthusiasm and such of criticism of mysticism found in Kant and Hegel. At first sight it seems that a decided criticism of mysticism and the fogs of mystification is very clear both in Kant and Hegel. A second sight shows that Kant as well as Hegel didn’t identify mysticism with the fog of reason-killing mystification. Considering systematical themes as for example the structure of the power of imagination and her (so to speak) nature, or the conditions of possibility of self-consciousness, of experience and for the intersubjective causes of judgment, there are many parallels to be found between the program of transcendental idealism in Kant and speculative idealism in Hegel on the one side, and central discussions in medieval mysticism on the other. Interlocutors for these parallels are especially Augustine, Eckhart v. Hochheim and Johannes Tauler. The explanation, what the metaphor ‘transcendental abyss’ means resp. includes, builds the logical centre. The article elucidates that in this perspective between the named mysticism and the core of German idealism a common question can be found, which is of highly present philosophical interest and importance. |
