Document Details : Title: De standaard der letteren Author(s): VAN GERREWEY, Christophe Journal: Tijdschrift voor Filosofie Volume: 86 Issue: 1 Date: 2024 Pages: 7-14 DOI: 10.2143/TVF.86.1.3293619 Abstract : This essay is an analysis of some of the opening sentences written by Belgian philosopher and author Patricia de Martelaere (1957-2009). The first sentences of her books, such as the early novel Koning der Wildernis [King of the Wilderness] (1971) and her last novel Het onverwachte Antwoord [The Unexpected Answer] (2004), but also of her philosophical essays and her academic work, reveal a kind of skepticism in the vein of David Hume. In De Martelaere’s work, there is not much that lasts or that resists critical and deconstructive thinking, and in the end, it is only the life of the mind and of literature that remains. |
