Document Details : Title: John's Reuse of Exodus Subtitle: Narrative Analogies with Theological Significance Author(s): DE JONG, Paulus Journal: Biblica Volume: 105 Issue: 2 Date: 2024 Pages: 223-240 DOI: 10.2143/BIB.105.2.3293542 Abstract : This article demonstrates that John’s Gospel displays extended narrative analogies to the book of Exodus. After a brief status quaestionis, the article examines connections between Jesus’ mission in John and Moses’ mission in Exodus: it analyses correspondences between specific signs of Moses and Jesus, highlights substantial parallels between the plotlines of Exodus and John, and reflects on shared themes between the two compositions. In addition, the article offers two examples of theological reflection that emerge from observing these literary parallels. These examples illustrate that perceiving the narrative analogies between Exodus and John is vital for understanding John’s Christology and the unfolding plot of the Gospel. |
