Abstract :
The book has a rich symbolic meaning rooted in the Bible itself and finds new expression in the Church and its rites, especially in the Eucharist. This study focusses on visual representations of the Book, i.e. the Bible or the Book of the Gospels, in particular in liturgical spaces. It is based on the books depicted between the 6th and 13th centuries in the wall paintings inside churches as well as in the manuscript miniatures from Egyptian monastic circles. As iconographic motif the book has several purposes in the images and reflects different discourses, among which two aspects will be addressed: on the one hand, how the Word of God is actualised, in accordance with the spirit of Scripture, in the Church; and on the other, how the parallel between the Bible and the Eucharist is brought to life in the Church.
