Document Details : Title: Faustus Felix Author(s): ZANIN, Manfredi Journal: Latomus Volume: 83 Issue: 2 Date: 2024 Pages: 337-360 DOI: 10.2143/LAT.83.2.3293441 Abstract : This paper puts forward a new analysis of Faustus Cornelius Sulla’s coin series (RRC 426, 56 BCE). Its main contention is that the agnomen FELIX on RRC 426/1-2 should not be regarded as an explicative legend, marking the ‘Sullan’ types as opposed to those related to Faustus’ persona. FELIX should be seen, on the contrary, as an onomastic element of Faustus himself. This weakens the relevance of the stylistic chiasmus in the light of which Faustus Sulla’s coinage has mostly been interpreted until today. A new discussion of the obverse of RRC 426/2 is thus put forward, arguing for the identification of the male bust with Hercules and, more precisely, for an imitation of the Tyrian coinage coeval with Faustus’ issues (as already argued by Lydia H. Lenaghan). |
