Ādam Sanā'ī of Ghazna is one of the handful key figures in the history of Persian literature who have had a lasting impact in a wide geographical area from the Balkans to the Bay of Bengal. His innovative approach to religious poetry and his personality became a model for generations of Persian poets, the five most influential being Farīd al-Dīn 'Aṭṭār, Niẓāmī of Ganja, Muṣliḥ al-Dīn Sa'dī, Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī, and Ḥāfiẓ. Sanā'ī started his poetic career as a court poet but later found religious patrons and devoted his life to couching spiritual and ethical wisdom in poetic forms. His homiletics lead his audience to develop their potential towards human perfection, to abstain from the world and to find salvation through love. |
