Document Details : Title: The Praising of Isis in Greece Subtitle: An Excavation History on the Isis Aretalogies Author(s): FITAS, Robin E.L. Journal: Pharos Volume: 25 Date: 2021-2023 Pages: 237-264 DOI: 10.2143/PHA.25.0.3293425 Abstract : This report provides a historical background on the seven Greek aretalogies dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis. These aretalogies illustrate the spread and growth of the Isiac religion within Greece. Aretalogies are hymns, poems or texts of praise which contain virtues or powers with which the goddess is associated. These are attributed to her in a formulaic manner. The seven aretalogies that are attested in Greece are found (or in some cases presumably found) in the vicinity of sanctuaries dedicated to Isis or her circle: Maroneia, Andros, Kyme, Thessaloniki, Kassandreia, Ios and Telmessos. I have created an overview of the excavation history for these aretalogies in which the archaeological details are presented per site. |
