Document Details : Title: Eine Beginenvita als geistliches Erbe Subtitle: Ideale weiblicher Vollkommenheit in der Rezeption des Lebens der Gertrud von Ortenberg Author(s): RINGLER, Siegfried Journal: Ons Geestelijk Erf Volume: 93 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2023 Pages: 352-365 DOI: 10.2143/OGE.93.3.3293335 Abstract : Written in the 14th century, the Vita von dem heiligen leben of Gertrud von Ortenberg was received through a single line of tradition well into the 20th century. It shows in an almost exemplary way how social and theological changes are intertwined. The depiction of a beguine’s life, influenced by the poverty movement, the religious women movement and mystical spirituality, was gradually transformed into the portrayal of the life of a ‘pious’ woman, in a society shaped by social classes, particularly that of the bourgeoisie. The ideal of female perfection changes accordingly: an independent, socially engaged life based on the experience of God’s presence, is replaced by a life of seclusion and submission, devoted to a God who will only be seen in the hereafter. |
