Document Details : Title: The Biblical and Ascetic Wisdom of Evagrius Ponticus in Arabic Subtitle: Three Short Works in Imitation of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Songs Author(s): DAVIS, Stephen J. Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 137 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2024 Pages: 241-264 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.137.1.3293321 Abstract : The transmission history of writings by the early Christian ascetic author Evagrius Ponticus is notorious complicated, with much of his oeuvre surviving principally in the form of translations. In this article, I focus on a set of three short works written in literary imitation of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Songs. The discovery of additional Arabic manuscripts containing copies of these texts in the library at Dayr al-Suryān (the Monastery of the Syrians) in Egypt has provided me with the occasion to produce an updated edition and the first ever English translation, and to revisit important questions related to authorship and reception history. |
