Document Details : Title: A New Critical Edition of the Hospitality of Dysmas (CANT 78/4; BHG 2119y; ECCA 630) Author(s): BILBY, Mark G. Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 137 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2024 Pages: 13-31 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.137.1.3293311 Abstract : This article presents the first Greek critical edition of the earliest retrievable hyperarchetype (= H1) of the The Hospitality of Dysmas (CANT 78/4; BHG 2119y; ECCA 630). This Byzantine short story, interpolated into manuscripts of the M2 and M3 families of the Greek Acts of Pilate, proved highly influential on medieval Latin texts and hagiographic traditions about Saint Dismas. Previous scholarship realized a critical edition of a secondary hyperarchetype (= H2), based on two closely related manuscripts (B and D), while offsetting a separate diplomatic edition of a third distinctive witness (Tb). The critical edition here supplements and helps to correct my previous English translation of H1, and its accompanying introductory materials are here freshly revised. |
