Abstract :
This article seeks to critically reassess the relationship between Julian of Aeclanum and Caelestius during the second phase of the Pelagian controversy. Augustine portrayed Julian as adhering to the Pelagian and Caelestian heresy, closely linking his name with those of Pelagius and Caelestius. However, with Pelagius absent from the Pelagian controversy after 418, our focus shifts solely to Julian and Caelestius. Augustine’s portrayal appears unsupported by our analysis of available sources. Specifically, a meticulous examination of a fragmentary letter from Julian to Zosimus reveals potential theological distinctions between Julian and Caelestius. Furthermore, Julian never uses the terms pelagianus or caelestianus, mentioning Pelagius only rarely and never referring to Caelestius in his writings.
