Abstract :
Over the past century or so, scholars of early Christianity have drawn attention to the disparity sometimes present in doctrinal controversies between (1) the positions attributed to alleged heretics by their opponents and (2) the actual views of those accused of heresy. The Pelagian Controversy is no exception: researchers have argued, for example, that Pelagius’s positions, as found in his extant writings, do not always match the portraits of 'Pelagianism' offered by opponents like Augustine and Jerome. The present article aims to revisit this topic, asking the question, 'What did Pelagius really teach?' In order to offer an answer, this article examines the twentynine propositions Pelagius was accused of teaching at the Synod of Diospolis and, on the basis of his extant writings, evaluates whether Pelagius actually held the positions his opponents (especially Augustine) associated with him and his name.
