Abstract :
During the Principate Period, the main cause of victimisation of the cities in Anatolia were earthquakes. The terrible earthquake of 17 A.D., during the reign of Tiberius, was one of them. Since the devastation caused to the settlements by this great earthquake is well known, the earthquake itself has recently received increased attention. However, the other earthquakes of Tiberius’ reign and his attitude towards earthquake-stricken settlements have not been analysed as a whole and in detail. Therefore, in addition to the earthquake of the year 17, the earthquakes in Ephesus, Cibyra and Nicaea are also included in this study. Likewise, the possible effects of earthquakes on settlements, the importance of helping settlements exposed to earthquakes, Tiberius’ process of helping the settlements, the attitude of the cities towards the emperor, and the possible reasons for Tiberius’ generous aid to the cities are analysed as a whole through new publications and data.
