Abstract :
According to Hervaeus Natalis, the inner word – the fruit of discursive activity caused by intellect and will – enables clear knowledge. This article examines in particular his thesis that the blessed, who enjoy the direct vision of God, can form mental words that enable them to consider successively different aspects of the divine essence, such as his mercy, justice, and wisdom. Hervaeus’s theory is studied against the background of the way in which the question of whether the blessed form a mental word of the divine essence was answered by his contemporaries, namely by Thomas Aquinas, William de la Mare, the authors of the Correctoria Corruptorii, Henry of Ghent, Giles of Rome, Peter of Auvergne, Nicholas Trivet, and Guy Terrena.
