Abstract :
In this paper the statue base (CIL XIV 4569) dedicated to Septimius Severus by the fabri tignuarii within their schola in Ostia is examined from a material perspective. A new study of the materiality of this multifaceted object – consisting of two different marble fragments and inscribed with a dedicatory text on its front and a nominative list on its left side – shows that it was aimed both to display the members’ collective identity and to enhance their sense of belonging. How the object was perceived and experienced by an audience is discussed through its visual and physical aspects as well as according to its context. This paper shows that if we regard the objects on which texts are inscribed as vital parts of the inscriptions, it is possible to reach new insights on the meanings and aims of the inscribed texts.
