Document Details : Title: Bemerkungen zum Stifter des Philippeion in Olympia Author(s): SCHNAIBLE, Elia T. Journal: BABESCH Volume: 99 Date: 2024 Pages: 119-130 DOI: 10.2143/BAB.99.0.3293141 Abstract : The article attempts to challenge the existing bipolarity in the question of who built the Philippeum in Olympia. Neither the account of Pausanias (5.20.9-10) nor the archaeological evidence provide clear indications that Philip II or Alexander III had the tholos erected. On the other hand, the statues inside the Philippeum, other honours received by Philip and the honorific monuments of Hellenistic rulers in Olympia reveal that the Philippeum had more in common with civic monuments honouring monarchical rulers. |
