Abstract :
The aim of the article was, first to analyze the difference between the concepts ‘phenomenon’ and ‘appearance’; then to show how centrally important ‘appearance’ was in the phenomenology of Eugen Fink. As a preliminary, I undertake a short digression to the transcendental philosophy of Kant and Husserl and claim that in Kant’s philosophy, phenomenon is connotated with his categorical notion usage and the appearance of sense perception. According to Husserl, the phenomenon belongs to the transcendental sphere while appearance is occasional and transcendent. As I argue on the basis of several of his texts, the initial turn in the interpretation of appearance is made in the works of Eugen Fink. The initial point of my discussion is Fink’s thesis: 'Appearing of being is the basis for why anything exists'. I try to discuss it on the level of the existential being of man, analyzing 'Anschein' and 'Vorschein' dialectically in the context of the opposition of light and darkness in light of an understanding of phenomenology as a science about appearance (Held).
