This article contends that his contribution can best be gauged when considering not only his writings but also his life, thus uniting the person and its thought into a biographical-theological sketch. Wainwright himself accounts for such an approach in his book Lesslie Newbigin: A Theological Life. This article takes the liberty to draw on personal experiences and conversations of the author with Geoffrey Wainwright, identifying his hermeneutics, key concepts and perspectives for pursuing theology today. Particular attention is given to the nature of transmitting the faith in ecclesial settings: the liturgical act plays a central role in forming and handing down faith traditions; for Wainwright this means taking up and presenting the richness and beauty of various strands of Christianity that should not cease to seek unity for the salvation of the world. Geoffrey Wainwright, éminent théologien méthodiste systématique, a été le pionnier d’une théologie qui intègre à la fois la liturgie et l’oecuménisme. Cet article soutient que sa contribution peut être mieux évaluée si l’on considère non seulement ses écrits mais aussi sa vie, réunissant ainsi la personne et sa pensée dans une esquisse biographico-théologique. Wainwright lui-même préconise une telle approche dans son livre Lesslie Newbigin: A Theological Life. Cet article prend la liberté de s’inspirer des expériences personnelles et des conversations de l’auteur avec Geoffrey Wainwright, en identifiant son herméneutique, ses concepts clés et ses perspectives pour la poursuite de la théologie aujourd’hui. Une attention particulière est accordée à la nature de la transmission de la foi dans les contextes ecclésiaux: l’acte liturgique joue un rôle central dans la formation et la transmission des traditions de foi; pour Wainwright, cela signifie reprendre et présenter la richesse et la beauté des différents courants du christianisme qui ne doivent pas cesser de rechercher l’unité pour le salut du monde. |
