This article analyzes the historical traditions underlying this verse. The Johannine Jesus denies the Samaritan woman’s claim that her people were the authentic representatives of Israel and points obliquely to their history of idolatry and wickedness. However, the Evangelist does leave room for them to be embraced as children of God if they accept Jesus, the Jewish Messiah, as the Savior of the world. |
