Document Details : Title: The Good Samaritan Parable and Helping Behavior Narratives in Emergency Situations during the COVID-19 Pandemic Subtitle: A Case of Mutual Illumination Author(s): DAGMANG, Ferdinand D. Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 46 Issue: 2 Date: 2023 Pages: 191-212 DOI: 10.2143/LS.46.2.3292704 Abstract : This study adopts the lessons (about helping and non-helping behavior) as well as the narrative-based ethical standards from the parable of the Good Samaritan for viewing the case of assistance and non-assistance in the emergency situation in Escolta, Manila during the COVID-19 pandemic. The parable (narrative #1) serves as a key to better understanding the nature of the helping/non-helping stories among the sidewalk vendors and dwellers of Escolta (narrative #2). Nevertheless, as the study develops into a juxtaposition of narratives, it also illustrates a mutual illumination between the parable and the Manila stories. Both narratives show 1) the power of pre-established traditions and legalities in constraining the giving of assistance to the needy and 2) the emotive component of prosocial behavior. |
